Renowned singer Lucky Ali has addressed his recent debacle with esteemed lyricist Javed Akhtar, openly admitting to feelings of regret regarding his earlier comments. In an interview with Navbharat Times, Lucky Ali noted that while his language was not offensive, he regretted his tone, particularly towards a respected elder.
“I acknowledge my own faults. At times, our reactions can be thoughtless,” he shared. “Mujhse bhi shayad ek bar ek buzurg ke prati badttameezee huyi, jiska mujhe afsos hai. Mauka mile toh maafi zaroor mangunga (I, too, may have shown rudeness to an elder, which I regret. If given the chance, I will apologize).”
The tension escalated last month when Lucky Ali criticized Javed Akhtar regarding an old video where the lyricist was perceived to have made provocative claims about Hindu-Muslim relations. A provocative tweet attributed to Javed suggested, “Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like you. Don’t become like Muslims. It’s a tragedy.”
In retaliation, Lucky Ali remarked, “Don’t become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f**k.” Later, he attempted to clarify his stance, stating, “What I intended was that arrogance is unappealing… it was a miscommunication on my part… even monsters can possess emotions, and I apologize for any offense caused.”
Delving deeper into his reaction, Lucky offered, “When someone continuously criticizes your community or faith, it stings, especially when it comes from someone so prominent and accountable. That spurred my reaction. I didn’t use abusive terms, but the situation escalated. If I’ve offended anyone, I’m sorry, yet we all carry responsibility.”
Javed Akhtar responded to the comments made by Lucky Ali with composure. In a conversation with India Today, he stated, “I must regard Lucky Ali’s perspective with a grain of salt. While I might not concur with him, I appreciate that he has viewpoints. That’s a positive aspect.”
Despite their heated exchanges, both artists indicate a desire to reconcile the matter, with Lucky Ali admitting his error and hoping for an opportunity to make amends.
This incident underscores the sensitivity involved in discussions about religion and community in India, particularly when figures of public interest are involved. It also highlights the profound effects social media can have on personal identities and the need for accountability in public dialogue.
