South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has said he wants to open a new chapter in relations with China, expressing hope that 2026 will mark the full restoration of ties between the two neighbors. His comments came during his first official visit to Beijing since taking office in June.
President Lee met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, making it their second meeting in just two months. Analysts say this shows strong interest from both sides in improving cooperation, especially in trade, tourism, and regional stability.
Lee said the summit was an important chance to rebuild trust and move forward together. He stressed that South Korea and China should work to make their strategic partnership strong and lasting, not just temporary. According to Lee, better cooperation will benefit both countries and help maintain peace in the region.
President Xi echoed the need for close cooperation, saying both nations have an important role in protecting regional peace. He also urged South Korea to make “correct strategic choices,” a statement seen by experts as a signal that China wants Seoul to consider Beijing’s views on sensitive issues like Taiwan and recent U.S. actions involving Venezuela.
The visit took place on a tense day in the region. Just hours before Lee arrived in Beijing, North Korea fired at least two ballistic missiles, its first such launch in two months. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the tests were meant to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent. Despite this, the China–South Korea talks focused on cooperation and stability rather than confrontation.
Economic ties were a major focus of the summit. South Korea and China signed 15 agreements covering areas such as trade, technology, and investment. Nine of these deals were signed directly between companies from both countries. Major firms involved included Alibaba International, Lenovo, and South Korea’s Shinsegae.
More than 200 South Korean business leaders accompanied President Lee on the four-day visit. Among them were top executives from Samsung Electronics, SK Group, and Hyundai Motor Group. Their presence highlighted the strong business interest in deeper cooperation with China, South Korea’s largest trading partner.
President Lee said the two countries should expand cooperation in fast-growing fields like artificial intelligence and the digital economy. He also pointed to opportunities in consumer goods, beauty products, food, and cultural content such as films, music, games, and sports.
However, challenges remain. South Korean officials noted that China is unlikely to lift its unofficial restrictions on Korean cultural content in the near future. These limits have affected the spread of Korean music, dramas, and entertainment in China in recent years.
Despite these hurdles, both sides appeared eager to move forward. With regional tensions high and global economic conditions uncertain, the Beijing visit showed a shared desire to stabilize and improve one of Asia’s most important partnerships.
If the plans discussed during this visit move ahead, 2026 could indeed become a turning point in China–South Korea relations, bringing renewed cooperation and stronger ties after years of strain.
