Tragic Shooting at Mexico's Teotihuacan Pyramid Claims One Canadian Life

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A devastating shooting incident occurred at the renowned Teotihuacan archaeological site, resulting in the death of a Canadian tourist and injuring 13 others, officials reported on Monday.

The violence erupted at the Pyramid of the Moon, a prominent feature of the ancient pre-Aztec city situated approximately 50 kilometers from Mexico City, known as one of the most frequented tourist locations in Mexico.

Authorities stated that the shooter opened fire on a group of tourists visiting the pyramid before reportedly committing suicide. The attacker’s identity and nationality remain undetermined.

Among the injured were six individuals shot, including a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and her child, a Brazilian, and two Americans, all of whom were transported to nearby hospitals for medical care.

Additionally, seven tourists sustained injuries while attempting to escape the scene, comprising visitors from Russia, Colombia, Brazil, and four from the U.S. They received treatment on-site.

Responding swiftly, police and National Guard units were dispatched. Authorities retrieved a firearm, a knife, and unused ammunition from the scene, promptly evacuating and cordoning off the area.

Social media videos depicted scenes of chaos as tourists sought refuge amidst the sounds of gunfire. Some individuals took cover while others fled the scene.

Teotihuacan, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famed for its ancient structures, attracting over 1.8 million visitors annually. Despite ongoing challenges with organized crime in Mexico, armed assaults at major archaeological sites are quite unusual.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand condemned the incident as a “horrific act of gun violence.” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered a thorough investigation and dispatched support to the area.

The motive of the assailant remains unconfirmed as the investigation progresses.
