Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, is facing a serious heating crisis after recent Russian missile and drone attacks damaged the city’s energy system. Even days after the strikes, more than 1,300 apartment buildings are still without heat, according to city officials. The attacks came during extremely cold winter weather, making the situation harder for thousands of families.
The mayor of Kyiv said that the strikes hit important energy and heating facilities across the city. As a result, homes, schools, and other residential buildings were left without warmth. At one point, more than 6,000 buildings had no heating. Emergency repair teams have worked day and night and managed to restore heat to many areas, but a large number of buildings remain affected.
Across Ukraine, the impact was even wider. Officials said that around 1.2 million properties lost electricity after the large-scale attack. The strikes happened during sub-zero temperatures, increasing the risk for elderly people, children, and those already in poor health.
Ukrainian leaders said that Russia is now focusing heavily on damaging energy systems and civilian infrastructure. In just one week, Ukraine reported hundreds of drone attacks, guided bombs, and missiles launched at cities and towns. These attacks have caused repeated power cuts and heating failures during the coldest time of the year.
The timing of the assault also raised concerns. The attacks took place while international talks were happening about possible ways to reduce or end the conflict. Ukrainian officials warned that continued strikes on civilian infrastructure show the serious threat faced by the country.
Despite the damage, utility workers continue repair efforts under dangerous conditions. Authorities say restoring heat to every building is a top priority. The situation highlights the human cost of the ongoing conflict, especially for ordinary people trying to survive winter without basic services.
As the fighting continues, Kyiv residents remain resilient, but the need for stable energy, protection of civilians, and long-term solutions has become more urgent than ever.
