Ukraine has reported the first civilian deaths of the year in its capital after a Russian air strike hit Kyiv and nearby areas overnight. Officials said the attack killed two people and injured at least one woman, bringing fresh fear and sorrow to a city already living under the long shadow of war.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, one of the strikes caused a fire at a medical facility in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi district, located in the northern part of the city. At the time of the attack, an inpatient ward was operating inside the building. Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked through the night to put out the flames. After the fire was controlled, rescue teams found the body of a civilian inside the facility.
Emergency services said that at least 25 people were safely evacuated from the building. A woman was injured during the attack and taken for medical care. Photos released by authorities showed rescue workers carrying a body on a stretcher past an ambulance, with snow covering the ground, highlighting the harsh winter conditions under which the rescue took place.
The violence was not limited to the capital. Russian strikes also hit towns and villages across the wider Kyiv region. The regional governor, Mykola Kalashnyk, said homes and important infrastructure were damaged in several areas. In the Fastiv district, located southwest of Kyiv, another civilian was killed when a strike hit a residential area.
As a result of the attacks, parts of the region were left without electricity. Repair crews were sent to restore power as quickly as possible, while residents assessed the damage to their homes.
Russia has not issued an immediate response to the reports. Both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny deliberately targeting civilians. Moscow says its attacks are aimed at military targets, while Ukrainian officials argue that civilian areas and essential services are repeatedly struck.
Kyiv has been a frequent target of missile and drone attacks during the nearly four-year-old conflict. While air defense systems have intercepted many incoming threats, some attacks still get through, often with deadly consequences for civilians.
The latest strike has renewed concerns about the safety of ordinary people, especially as winter deepens and access to power, heat, and medical care becomes even more critical. Hospitals and emergency services remain under pressure as they respond to both the war and the cold weather.
For many Ukrainians, the attack is a painful reminder that despite hopes for calm at the start of the year, the war continues to claim innocent lives. As fighting goes on, civilians remain caught in the middle, facing loss, fear, and uncertainty each day.
