Profile of Jonathan Ross: ICE Officer Involved in Minneapolis Shooting

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The agent involved in the recent shooting incident in Minneapolis has been recognized as Jonathan Ross, a veteran officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a former soldier in the Iraq War.

Reports indicate that on Wednesday, Ross shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, as she attempted to flee from federal agents. The FBI has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, particularly focusing on whether it was an act of self-defense.

Background of Jonathan Ross

At 43 years old, Jonathan Ross boasts almost two decades of experience in law enforcement. Here’s a summary of his career:

  • Deployed to Iraq with the Indiana National Guard from 2004 to 2005

  • Functioned as a machine gunner as part of a combat patrol

  • Joined the U.S. Border Patrol in 2007 in El Paso, Texas

  • Focused on intelligence operations combating drug and human trafficking

  • Became an ICE deportation officer in Minnesota in 2015

  • Engages in fugitive operations targeting particularly dangerous individuals

  • Has acted as a team leader on the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force

  • Trained extensively in firearms, SWAT operations, and active shooter scenarios

  • Fluent in Spanish, Ross attended the Border Patrol Academy in New Mexico

Previous Incident: Injured in the Line of Duty

Authorities disclosed that Ross suffered severe injuries last June while attempting to arrest a suspect in Bloomington, Minnesota.

During that operation:

  • He and FBI agents attempted to arrest Roberto Munoz-Guatemala, an illegal resident

  • The suspect ignored law enforcement signals

  • As Ross blocked the car's path, he announced his law enforcement status

  • His arm became trapped while trying to open the vehicle

  • The suspect drove off, dragging Ross for almost a football field's length

  • Despite deploying a Taser, the suspect continued to flee

  • Ross endured multiple severe cuts and received numerous stitches

Munoz-Guatemala was ultimately convicted of assaulting a federal officer, with the jury affirming he should have recognized Ross’s authority.

Details Surrounding the Minneapolis Shooting

While federal officials have not publicly named the agent involved in the Renee Good shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the agent had faced a similar situation previously—referring to the incident in Bloomington involving Ross.

Authorities assert that Ross discharged his firearm, believing Good intended to run him or fellow agents over. However, video evidence has sparked public skepticism, leading to protests demanding accountability.

The FBI continues its inquiry into the use of lethal force, with Minnesota officials also expressing an intention to investigate independently.

Government Reaction

Vice President JD Vance offered support for the officer, lauding his dedication and service without naming him directly.

“This is a man who has dedicated years to serving this nation and has faced significant risks in his role,” Vance remarked.

The Department of Homeland Security has refrained from confirming Ross's identity for safety reasons pertaining to him and his family. Officials noted that he is a member of ICE's specialized response team, which necessitates rigorous training and selection.

“He acted in accordance with his training,” said DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. “His life has been devoted to serving the nation.”

Next Steps

Efforts to reach out to Ross have been unsuccessful up to this point. As inquiries proceed, this case has emerged as a crucial topic in the broader national dialogue regarding federal enforcement methods and the application of force.
