This August, Major League Baseball (MLB) will mark a historic moment. Jen Pawol will break a long-standing barrier by becoming the first woman to umpire a regular-season MLB game. She is set to officiate during a weekend series between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves. On Saturday, she will work the bases for a doubleheader, and on Sunday, she will take on the demanding role of home plate umpire.

Why This Moment Matters
This achievement goes beyond just one person’s success—it represents a meaningful milestone in a sport where umpiring roles have been overwhelmingly held by men. Other major sports have taken similar steps:

the NBA appointed its first female referee in 1997, the NFL followed with its first female official in the 2010s, and international soccer saw a woman officiate at a Men’s World Cup in 2022. Now, it's baseball’s turn.

Jen Pawol’s Long Road to the Big Leagues
Jen Pawol’s journey is a story of dedication and perseverance:

She grew up in New Jersey and excelled in both softball and soccer during high school. She earned a scholarship to Hofstra University, where she played Division I softball as a catcher and, in 2001, represented the U.S. on the women’s national baseball team.

After college, Pawol worked as an art teacher and earned a master’s degree. Although she enjoyed teaching, she felt a pull toward baseball—this time in the role of umpire.

  • From 2010 to 2016, she umpired NCAA softball games. In 2015, she joined an MLB umpire tryout camp and later trained at the professional umpire academy in Florida.
  • Her professional career began in 2016 in the Gulf Coast League (rookie-level). Over the years, she steadily rose through the minor leagues.
  • In 2023, she became the first woman in 34 years to reach the Triple-A level and was assigned as the home plate umpire for the Triple-A Championship game.
  • In 2024, she became the first female to umpire an MLB spring training game since 2007.
  • She was then added to MLB’s “call-up list,” which allows minor league umpires to fill in during regular-season games when needed.
  • Her weekend assignment during the Marlins‑Braves series is a culmination of nearly a decade of effort and perseverance.

What’s Scheduled for the Weekend

  • Saturday: Pawol will work the bases for both games of the doubleheader between the Marlins and Braves.
  • Sunday: She will take on the key role of home plate umpire in the series finale.
  • This will be the first time a woman achieves this at the highest level in a regular-season MLB game.

Celebrations and Support
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Pawol’s achievement, saying it reflects her hard work and passion and will inspire young women everywhere. The Jackie Robinson Foundation also celebrated her, noting that her barrier-breaking moment echoes the legacy of Jackie Robinson nearly 80 years ago.

Players and managers have also shown enthusiasm. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called it "good for the game," while pitcher Kevin Gausman said that if she “is good enough, she absolutely deserves to be there.” Phillies star Trea Turner added that he saw Pawol in spring training and was impressed, noting how important representation is for everyone.

A Step Toward the Future
Jen Pawol’s debut is more than a personal milestone—it’s a turning point for gender equality in baseball officiating. Her success opens doors for others and sends a powerful message that talent and hard work, not gender, should determine opportunity. Fans and commentators see this moment as a positive step toward a more inclusive sport.

What Her Story Teaches Us
Through her journey, Pawol shows how following passion, working tirelessly, and staying dedicated can lead to unexpected, groundbreaking achievements. Her path weaves together athleticism, education, persistence, and courage. It’s proof that even when a route isn’t well-traveled, commitment can create new paths—and inspire others along the way.
