Israel’s Attack in Qatar Destroys Peace Talks and Increases Tensions

A year ago, I met with the Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Doha, Qatar. He was relaxed and confident. At that time, Qatar was seen as a safe place where even enemies could sit and talk. But now everything has changed. On Tuesday afternoon, Israel attacked a building in Doha where al-Hayya and other top Hamas leaders were staying. This has ruined the peace efforts that were trying to stop the war in Gaza.

Who is Khalil al-Hayya?

Khalil al-Hayya is one of the top leaders of Hamas. He has been in charge of talks with Israel and the United States since the fighting began in Gaza. Through Qatar and Egypt, al-Hayya and others sent messages and negotiated deals, hoping to stop the war and free hostages. He was meeting with Israeli and American diplomats just before the attack happened.

The fact that Israel openly said it carried out the attack made many people believe that the new peace plans from the U.S. were a trick. Some believe they were only trying to bring Hamas leaders together in one place so they could be targeted.

Qatar Used to be a Safe Place

When I met al-Hayya in October last year, he came into the meeting with very little security. We had to turn off our phones, and only a couple of bodyguards came inside with him. Outside, a few Qatari police in plain clothes sat in an SUV and smoked cigarettes. That was it. He and his team felt safe moving around in Doha.

For years, Qatar has tried to build a reputation like Switzerland in the Middle East — a neutral place where even opposing sides can meet to negotiate. The U.S. even negotiated with the Taliban in Doha. Since the attacks on October 7, 2023, Qatar became a hub for diplomatic efforts to stop the war in Gaza.

But now, with this attack, those efforts are in ruins. A senior western diplomat said bluntly, “There is no diplomacy.”

What Happened in Doha?

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, told Israelis that their enemies should never feel safe again. He said this attack shows that Hamas and its allies will always face consequences for attacking Israel.

At the same time, Israel’s military ordered all Palestinians in Gaza City to leave and move south. It is believed that about one million civilians could be affected by this forced movement.

Netanyahu also spoke directly to Palestinians on TV. He said they should “stand up for your rights” and accept peace talks led by U.S. President Trump. He promised that Palestinians could have a better future if they removed Hamas leaders.

But for many Palestinians, this message feels empty. Israel has already destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes in Gaza. Hospitals, schools, and universities have also been damaged or destroyed. Many people are starving, and Gaza is facing a humanitarian disaster.

The Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Since the start of the war, Israel has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, most of whom were civilians. Human rights organizations say Israel’s actions have caused massive suffering.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for war crimes, and Israel is being investigated by the International Court of Justice for possible genocide.

The attack in Doha is not just about Gaza anymore. It shows that Israel is willing to fight on all fronts, not just inside Gaza, and it believes it has the support of the U.S.

The U.S. Reaction

The White House responded with a rare criticism of the attack. Qatar is a close U.S. ally, hosting a major military base and investing heavily in America. Still, Netanyahu seems confident that U.S. President Donald Trump will not act strongly against him. Instead, Trump might only give a small warning and let things go.

This shows how much Israel depends on its relationship with Trump and how little it cares about international rules or the opinions of other world leaders.

What’s Next?

The war in Gaza continues to get worse. Many countries, including the UK, France, Canada, and Australia, are planning to recognize Palestinian independence at the United Nations later this month. Netanyahu’s government, made up of hard-line nationalist allies, is likely to push for taking over parts of Palestinian land in the West Bank.

The Doha attack may be a sign that Israel’s government will keep pushing forward with military action, ignoring diplomacy and making peace harder to achieve.
