Israel Orders Gaza City Residents to Evacuate Before Ground Assault

Israel has warned all the people living in Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip, to leave immediately. The military says that a big ground attack is coming and staying in the city will be very dangerous. About one million people live in Gaza City, and they have been told to move to the southern part of Gaza to stay safe.

This announcement has caused fear and confusion. Many people don’t know where to go or how they will afford to leave. The United Nations (UN) and other international organizations have raised concerns that forcing so many people to move could cause even more suffering.

Why Is Israel Telling People to Leave?

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that airstrikes on Gaza City in recent days are just the beginning of a larger military operation. He said the army will carry out a ground attack to capture Hamas’s last stronghold in the city.

The Israeli military also dropped leaflets over Gaza City and posted messages on social media. They said: “For your safety, evacuate immediately.” They warned that staying in Gaza City could be life-threatening because of the military operations.

The security cabinet of Israel approved this plan after peace talks with Hamas, aimed at stopping the fighting and releasing hostages, failed in July.

The goal of this military operation is to defeat Hamas and rescue the remaining hostages. Out of 48 hostages still held by Hamas, only 20 are believed to be alive.

What Is Happening to the People?

Photographs and videos show people walking, using donkey carts, and traveling in vehicles to the south. However, many are still stuck because they don’t know where to go or cannot afford the transportation.

One mother, Hanaa, said she didn’t know where to take her children, so she was waiting until they were in “real danger.” She had already lost her home in the beginning of the war and has been staying with relatives since then.

Another person, Razan Salha, a student, shared that she left Gaza City two days ago due to bombings. She now lives with 20 relatives in a crowded room in another city. She said moving was expensive, and not everyone could afford to leave.

The UN’s Warnings

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have warned that forcing hundreds of thousands of people to move could lead to a disaster. The UN says many families cannot leave because of high costs, unsafe roads, or a lack of space in other areas.

They said that more than 97,000 people have been forced to leave since August 14, but only 50,000 have actually moved because it’s too hard for many others.

The UN also said that ordering people to leave could be considered “forcible transfer” under international law, which is against the rules for protecting civilians during wars.

Where Are People Going?

The Israeli army told people to move to a place called al-Mawasi, which they call a “humanitarian area.” They say this area has hospitals, water, food, tents, and medicines provided with the help of international groups.

However, al-Mawasi has also been bombed many times during the war, and the UN says no place in Gaza is completely safe. The tent camps are already overcrowded, and hospitals are operating with far more patients than they can handle.

The UN warned that there is only a small window of time to stop famine from spreading. If more people are forced to move, it could make food shortages and health problems even worse.

Famine and Starvation

On August 22, the UN confirmed that Gaza City is experiencing famine. Since then, Gaza’s health ministry reported that at least 121 people have died from starvation or malnutrition.

Israel disputes the numbers but says it is trying to send more food and aid to the area. The UN insists that Israel, which controls Gaza’s borders, must allow enough supplies to prevent more deaths.

Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian chief, warned that unless action is taken by the end of September, the famine could spread to other cities like Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

The Cause of the War

This war began after Hamas, the armed group in Gaza, attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023. About 1,200 people were killed, and 251 others were taken hostage during the attack.

Since then, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 64,605 people, mostly civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Israel says it is trying to stop Hamas from attacking again and rescue the hostages. But international organizations argue that the ongoing war and attacks are worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The Human Impact

For families living in Gaza, this is a life-changing event. Many have lost their homes, food, and basic necessities. People are confused and scared, not knowing where to go or how they will survive.

Children, the elderly, and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. Health services are collapsing, and hospitals are overwhelmed. The world’s response so far has not been enough to meet the growing needs of the displaced population.

Conclusion: A Dangerous Situation

Israel’s warning to Gaza City residents to evacuate signals a dangerous and uncertain time for civilians in the region. Many families are being forced to leave their homes without a safe place to go.

International organizations are urging countries to protect civilians and allow more aid to reach those affected by the war. Without immediate action, the crisis in Gaza could become even worse, with more deaths from starvation, disease, and violence.

For now, the people of Gaza City remain in a state of fear, waiting for help and hoping for peace.
