Jakarta, Indonesia — Authorities in Indonesia have disclosed that a 17-year-old boy is the prime suspect in last week’s bombing at a Jakarta mosque located within a high school. The homemade explosives he created resulted in injuries to 96 individuals, including the suspect himself, who is currently hospitalized following two surgical procedures.
According to police reports, this adolescent was a solitary figure engrossed in radical and violent material he discovered online. Although he admired various international extremist figures, officials have noted that he lacks formal ties to any organized militant groups.
“This individual was driven to orchestrate such an event,” stated Iman Imanuddin, Jakarta Police's Director of General Criminal Investigation. “He felt isolated and lacked a platform to voice his grievances, whether to family, peers, or educational authorities.”
Investigators found that the teenager had constructed seven explosive devices utilizing basic materials, such as 6-volt batteries, plastic jerry cans, remote controls, and sharp nails designed to inflict maximum damage. Out of the seven bombs, four detonated, while the police managed to neutralize the other three.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies recovered a toy submachine gun marked with white supremacist messages and references to various international extremists, including neo-Nazis tied to attacks in Canada and Italy, as well as the Christchurch mosque assailant and Columbine shooters. “These symbols and names represent violent ideologies that inspired the suspect’s actions, but we found no links to any terrorist organization,” remarked Mayndra Eka Wardhana, spokesperson for the elite counterterrorism division.
Given Indonesia’s stringent anti-terrorism regulations, it is likely that the suspect will not face terrorism-related charges but could instead be prosecuted for serious premeditated assault, which could lead to a maximum imprisonment of 12 years.
Furthermore, authorities have indicated that over half of the injured students suffered from hearing impairments, with four reporting sudden deafness. Currently, eleven students are hospitalized, one critically due to severe burns.
This tragedy has sparked a heightened awareness regarding the dangers of online radicalization among youth and the accessibility of DIY explosive-making instructions.
