Israeli Military Chief Warns Against Full Gaza Takeover

An important military leader in Israel, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, has warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that pressing ahead with a full military takeover of Gaza could lead to serious problems. His concerns focus on two key issues: the safety of hostages and the strain on the Israeli army. This disagreement has created a clear divide between Israel’s political and military leaders.

A Risky Plan, Say Military Leaders
In a private meeting that lasted hours, Zamir warned Netanyahu that invading the remaining parts of Gaza could trap Israeli soldiers in territory Israel chose to leave about twenty years ago. He argued that moving deeper into Gaza would increase the danger to the hostages still held there.

Although Israel now controls about 75% of Gaza, taking over the rest could lead to a costly and long-lasting fight in areas filled with civilians. Zamir and other officers worry this approach might turn into an endless war, causing harm to many lives and lowering soldiers’ morale.

Zamir Calls the Plan a “Trap”
Reports say Zamir described the expansion plan as a “strategic trap” that could weaken Israel’s military for many years. Instead, he suggested a different strategy: surrounding Gaza, cutting off supplies, and hitting key targets without occupying large urban areas.

Despite his concerns, Zamir stressed that he would follow orders if political leaders decide to move forward. He believes military strategy should be discussed carefully, especially when lives are at risk.

Netanyahu Pushes Forward
Prime Minister Netanyahu, supported by far-right ministers, insists on expanding military control over all of Gaza. They say this is necessary to defeat Hamas and free the hostages.

During the meeting, Netanyahu made clear he would not allow Hamas to remain in power. He asked the army to prepare workable plans, including ideas like relocating civilians to southern Gaza. Zamir responded by asking, “Who will govern two million people?”

A Tense Clash of Views
The disagreement between Zamir and Netanyahu grew tense. Netanyahu’s son, Yair Netanyahu, accused Zamir of leading a “mutiny,” which Zamir opposed. He asked, “Why are you speaking against me in the middle of a war?”

Warnings from All Sides
Israeli media say top military and political figures are worried about the plan. Some intelligence sources warn that reoccupying Gaza could endanger all remaining hostages and lead to many soldier casualties in crowded and booby-trapped areas.

International voices, including the United Nations, have called the plan “deeply alarming.” Aid groups warn that a larger invasion could cause a disaster for Gaza’s many civilians, many of whom are already displaced or facing hunger.

Why It Matters

  • This disagreement shows a bigger issue inside Israel:
  • Military view: Avoid rushing into urban occupation. Use careful strategies that protect hostages and keep troops safe.
  • Political view: Act strongly to defeat Hamas and rescue hostages, even if it risks more harm.
  • How this disagreement is settled may decide Israel’s future path in Gaza — whether through a careful plan or full military action.
