In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel has executed a major strike aimed at Hamas’ newly appointed military commander in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the operation specifically targeted Mohammed Odeh, who has recently assumed leadership of Hamas’ military wing following the death of his predecessor earlier this month.
Israeli officials have indicated that Odeh, who formerly led Hamas’ intelligence division, is recognized as one of the last senior commanders still active in the organization’s military leadership. Netanyahu asserted that Odeh played a role in the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel that sparked the current hostilities. Although there was no immediate confirmation from Israeli authorities regarding Odeh's status following the attack, subsequent reports from local media and defense officials suggested that the operation achieved its objectives.
The targeted strike reportedly struck an apartment building situated in the Rimal district of Gaza City. Local health officials reported casualties, noting that several individuals were killed and over 20 sustained injuries due to the destruction of the upper floors of the building. Rescue operations continued for hours, searching through debris for potential survivors and more victims. As of yet, Hamas has not provided an official statement regarding Odeh’s condition or acknowledged his new appointment.
This military initiative coincides with increased pressure from Israel on various fronts. On the same day, Israeli forces amplified their military engagement in Lebanon to confront Hezbollah positions. Israeli officials commented that the broader campaign aims to diminish the influence of armed groups connected to Hamas and those backed by Iran operating within the region.
Mohammed Odeh has reportedly taken over from Izz al-Din al-Haddad, another significant commander whose death was confirmed in a prior strike on May 15. Security experts suggest that Israel’s ongoing strategy focuses on dismantling the senior leadership of Hamas to undermine the group's command structure and operational capacity in Gaza.
Simultaneously, ceasefire discussions between Israel and Hamas remain stagnant despite international diplomatic efforts. Israel continues to call for the release of remaining hostages and disarmament of Hamas, while Hamas insists on a lasting ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza before it will agree to more extensive agreements. This impasse has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the area and heightened concerns about potential regional instability.
The conflict, ignited by Hamas's attacks in October 2023, has resulted in overwhelming devastation and significant casualties on both sides. According to Gaza health authorities, tens of thousands of Palestinians have died since the onset of hostilities, while more than 1,200 Israelis were killed in the initial attacks. International organizations continue to advocate for humanitarian access and renewed peace dialogues as hostilities persist across Gaza and neighboring territories.
