MiddleEastBulletin reports that Israel carried out a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon early Saturday, killing one person and wounding seven others. The strikes also briefly cut a highway that connects Beirut with parts of southern Lebanon, affecting daily life in the region.
The attacks targeted the village of Msayleh, hitting a site where heavy machinery was stored. Many vehicles at the location were destroyed. Tragically, a vehicle carrying vegetables was caught in the strike, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to another, according to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV. The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that the person killed was a Syrian citizen, while the wounded included another Syrian national and six Lebanese, among them two women.
National Reactions
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun strongly condemned the attack. He warned that Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon might be intended to "compensate" for peace in Gaza with renewed aggression in Lebanon.
“Once again, southern Lebanon falls under the fire of blatant Israeli aggression against civilian facilities. This happens without any justification or pretext. The seriousness of this attack lies in the timing — after the Gaza ceasefire and the Palestinian approval of its terms,” Aoun said in a statement on social media.
He called on the international community to address the ongoing threats in Lebanon, emphasizing the risk that political motives could continue to fuel violence in the region.
Israeli Military Statement
Israel said the strikes targeted machinery stored for the militant group Hezbollah, which it says was being used to rebuild infrastructure for the organization. Israel claims that Hezbollah is trying to recover its military strength after suffering heavy losses during the 14-month war with Israel that ended last November.
Since the ceasefire, Israel has carried out near-daily airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which have killed dozens of people. Israel justifies these actions by pointing to what it describes as Hezbollah’s attempts to rearm and rebuild after the war.
Background: The Israel-Hezbollah Conflict
The recent conflict is rooted in long-standing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The 14-month war, which ended in November 2024 with a US-brokered ceasefire, resulted in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians. The war caused roughly $11 billion in damages in Lebanon, according to the World Bank. In Israel, 127 people died, including 80 soldiers.
The war began in October 2023, when Hezbollah fired rockets across the border a day after a Hamas-led incursion into southern Israel triggered fighting in Gaza. This escalation quickly evolved into a broader conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with widespread destruction in southern Lebanon.
Humanitarian Concerns
The recent airstrikes in Msayleh come amid ongoing international concern over civilian safety in Lebanon. Earlier this month, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called for renewed efforts to permanently end hostilities in Lebanon. According to the UN, 103 civilians were killed in Lebanon since the ceasefire up until the end of September 2025.
Local residents faced immediate challenges due to the strikes. The highway connecting Beirut with southern towns was temporarily closed, causing disruptions in transport and daily activities. The attack on a civilian vehicle carrying vegetables highlights the risks that ordinary people continue to face.
Looking Ahead
Lebanon remains on high alert as the threat of renewed violence persists. President Aoun’s warnings underline the fragile situation in southern Lebanon, where civilians live amid the possibility of sudden airstrikes and military escalation. International organizations continue to call for restraint, urging both sides to prevent further loss of life.
MiddleEastBulletin emphasizes that the conflict in southern Lebanon is a reminder of the human cost of regional tensions. Civilians, including women and children, continue to be at risk. The attacks underscore the urgent need for sustained peace efforts, monitoring of military actions, and protection of non-combatants in areas affected by conflict.
