On August 20, 2025, Israel’s military began the first phase of an operation to take control of Gaza City. This marks a serious increase in fighting between Israel and Hamas, the group that governs Gaza.

Background

The Gaza Strip is a small, crowded area along the Mediterranean coast and has been a hotspot for conflict between Israel and Palestinians for many years. In October 2023, tensions increased sharply when Hamas militants carried out a major attack on Israel. About 1,200 people were killed, and 251 were taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a military campaign to weaken Hamas and protect its citizens.

The Initial Phase of the Operation

Israeli military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said that the first steps of the operation involved surrounding Gaza City. Defrin described Hamas as a “battered and bruised” group, showing that its strength has decreased. Israel’s goal is to expand its operations within Gaza City, where Hamas has its key offices and military facilities.

The operation comes after a clash near Khan Younis, south of Gaza City, where over 15 Hamas fighters attacked Israeli soldiers with guns and anti-tank missiles. One Israeli soldier was seriously injured, and two others had minor injuries. This encounter led Israel to step up its military presence in the area.

Mobilization of Reservists

Israel has also called up tens of thousands of reservists to prepare for a larger assault on Gaza City. These reservists are expected to report for duty in September, giving a short window for potential diplomatic talks before major escalation. The mobilization shows Israel’s commitment to its military goals in Gaza.

Hamas’s Response

Hamas’s military branch, the Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed their involvement in the Khan Younis attack. They said one of their fighters carried out a suicide action against Israeli troops during the fight. This demonstrates that Hamas continues to resist Israel’s military operations.

International Reactions

Countries and international organizations have expressed concern about the rising violence and its effects on civilians. The United Nations Secretary-General called for an immediate ceasefire, warning that continued fighting could cause massive civilian deaths and more instability in the region.

The UN Human Rights Office criticized Israel for limiting humanitarian aid to Gaza, saying the small amount of supplies allowed into the area is not enough to prevent widespread starvation and suffering.

Humanitarian Impact

The conflict has caused a large number of civilian casualties. Gaza’s health authorities report that over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the fighting escalated in October 2023, with most victims being women and children. Many families are displaced, lacking food, water, and shelter, and the humanitarian situation is worsening day by day.

Ceasefire Proposals

Arab mediators have suggested a 60-day ceasefire to reduce the violence. Their plan includes gradually releasing hostages and having Israel withdraw troops from parts of Gaza. Hamas has accepted this proposal, while Israel is still reviewing it. The result of these discussions remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether a temporary peace can be achieved.

The start of Israel’s military operation in Gaza City is a major step in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. While Israel aims to weaken Hamas’s military and governmental power, international groups continue to urge caution and stress the importance of protecting civilians. The next few weeks will be critical in determining whether the conflict escalates further or moves toward a temporary resolution.
