Israel confirmed on Tuesday that it will not take part in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta after its athletes were denied visas. The Israel Gymnastics Federation called the decision shocking and heartbreaking, highlighting the impact on athletes who had trained for years to compete on the world stage.
Indonesia, the host nation, denied visas to Israeli gymnasts, citing objections from local groups, including the Council of Islamic Clerics and some government officials in Jakarta. The move comes amid international attention on Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, even after a ceasefire was recently implemented.
Appeals to Court of Arbitration for Sport
The Israel Gymnastics Federation filed two appeals with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to reverse Indonesia’s visa denial and allow participation.
The first appeal was dismissed due to CAS lacking jurisdiction over Indonesia’s visa decisions.
The second appeal, requesting either the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) to ensure Israeli participation or to relocate the event, remains pending.
CAS rejected requests for urgent provisional measures, effectively ending Israel’s hopes of competing in this championship. IGF General Secretary Sarit Shenar told Reuters, “For this world championship, this is the end of the road. We cannot, no matter what, fix their hearts. For future sports, I hope CAS makes a strong decision that prevents such discrimination against any athlete from any country.”
Background on Gaza Conflict
The decision comes in the context of ongoing global concern over the Gaza conflict. The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led forces attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza reportedly killed nearly 68,000 people, with thousands more feared trapped under rubble.
Although a ceasefire recently halted large-scale fighting, tensions remain high. Indonesia has no formal diplomatic ties with Israel, and public opinion in the country has strongly criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Impact on Israeli Athletes
The denial of visas has caused emotional and professional distress for Israeli athletes, many of whom had prepared for years to compete at the world level. The federation expressed hope that future decisions by international sports bodies would prevent political or religious considerations from blocking athlete participation.
Shenar emphasized, “I want to see a very strong decision that leaves no room for such decisions from any country, to any international federation.”
Global Reactions
The case highlights the complex intersection of sports, politics, and international law. While CAS is reviewing the second appeal, many in the sports world are calling for stronger protections to ensure athletes are not punished for political conflicts beyond their control.
Indonesia’s refusal demonstrates how global conflicts can spill into international sporting events, affecting athletes, federations, and fans alike. The situation raises questions about the neutrality of global sports competitions and the role of political influence in determining participation.
