Denmark Beats Greece 3-1 to Stay Top in Qualifiers

Post by : Monika

Denmark won 3-1 against Greece at home and stayed at the top of Group C in the World Cup qualifying. This victory keeps their record perfect—they have not lost in the qualifiers so far. Greece, on the other hand, are now out of chances to qualify.

Standings and What It Means

With this win, Denmark has 10 points. They are tied with Scotland on points, but Denmark is ahead because of goal difference (they have scored more goals overall). Both teams are sure to get at least a playoff spot, but only the group winner will qualify directly to the World Cup. Greece, with just three points, can no longer catch up.

So, the final match between Denmark and Scotland will be very important. It might decide who goes directly to the tournament and who has to go through playoffs.

How the Match Went

Although Denmark admitted they did not play their best game, they still took advantage of mistakes by Greece to score three goals before half time.

First Goal (21st minute):
Greece made a bad pass back toward their goalkeeper, but it was too short. Rasmus Højlund from Denmark took the ball and scored easily.

Second Goal (40th minute):
Mikkel Damsgaard took a corner kick. Joachim Andersen jumped high and headed the ball into the net.

Third Goal (41st minute):
Just one minute later, Greece again made a defensive error. Damsgaard struck quickly and put the ball into the empty net.

  • By halftime, Denmark was leading 3-0.
  • Greece’s Goal and Danish Defense

Greece got a goal back in the 63rd minute. Christos Tzolis launched a strong shot during a fast counterattack. The ball went over the Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, marking the first goal Denmark conceded in this qualifying campaign.

  • After that, Greece pushed hard to get another goal. However:
  • Schmeichel made a key save against a Greek substitute.
  • In another dangerous moment, Andersen cleared the ball off the goal line to prevent a tie.
  • In the end, Greece could not break through Denmark’s defense again.

Reactions from Players

Denmark midfielder Morten Hjulmand said the team was not at its top form but that the win was the most important thing. He emphasized that getting the three points matters more than playing perfectly.
