Israel Legalizes New West Bank Settlement as Settler Movement Gains Momentum

Post by : Saif Nasser

The recent legalization of a new Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank has highlighted how quickly the situation on the ground is changing. What began as a small and unauthorized outpost has, in just one month, become a fully recognized settlement known as Yatziv. The site lies on a hill overlooking the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour, near Jerusalem.

On Monday, Israeli settlers and government officials gathered at the hilltop to celebrate. Music played loudly as construction work continued around them. Israeli soldiers stood guard while families shared food and marked what they called a historic moment. Across the valley, the sounds of daily life in Beit Sahour continued, including calls to prayer from local mosques.

For many settlers, this moment was the result of years of effort. They had long wanted the land, which they say holds historical importance for Jews and fits into a chain of settlements around Jerusalem. Over time, they blocked plans to build a hospital for Palestinian children on the site. Instead, they waited for the right political moment to claim the land.

That moment came quickly. In December, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the approval of Yatziv along with 18 other outposts. Smotrich, a strong supporter of the settler movement, said openly that settlers plan to remain there permanently and rejected the idea of a future Palestinian state in the area.

Settlers say they felt encouraged by the current political climate. Israel’s far-right government, in power since late 2022, strongly supports settlement expansion. The return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency and a deadly attack near the area in November also helped settlers push their case forward.

From the Palestinian perspective, the expansion of settlements is deeply troubling. Most of the world considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law. Palestinians say these settlements take away their land, restrict movement, and make it harder to build an independent and connected state. The West Bank is seen by Palestinians as a key part of their future country.

The land where Yatziv now stands has a long and disputed history. Nearly 20 years ago, there were discussions about building a hospital for Palestinian children there, with international support. That plan was strongly opposed by settlers and never moved forward. Later, the site became an Israeli military base, making it easier for settlers to establish a permanent presence.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said this change in land use was critical. Once the area became a military site, it was simpler to turn it into a settlement. He also noted that current Israeli leadership follows a very different path from past efforts that focused on cooperation with Palestinians.

The rapid legalization of Yatziv shows how settlement growth is accelerating. For settlers, it is a major victory. For Palestinians, it is another sign that hopes for a two-state solution are fading. As settlements expand, tensions on the ground continue to rise, making peace harder to achieve.
