On Sunday night, hackers breached Iran’s state television satellite feeds, showcasing videos of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, who urged security forces to refrain from “pointing weapons at the people.” This incident unfolded against the backdrop of nationwide protests met with a brutal government response.
Activists report that at least 4,029 individuals have lost their lives during the disturbances that began on December 28 as a response to Iran’s economic difficulties. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, the death toll includes 3,786 protesters, 180 security personnel, 28 children, and 35 non-protesters. Additionally, over 26,000 arrests have been documented, with fears mounting over possible executions.
The hacked transmission included two clips of Pahlavi, along with purported footage of security personnel expressing loyalty to the citizenry, although independent verification of this has not been confirmed. The state broadcaster merely referred to a “brief disruption from an unidentified source” without addressing the aired content.
This incident is not unprecedented. In 1986, CIA support enabled allies of Pahlavi to broadcast a short unauthorized signal in Iran. More recently, in 2022, Iranian channels featured video clips from the opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq that called for the execution of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Moreover, tensions between Iran and the U.S. continue to escalate, as the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers navigated Singapore’s waters toward the Strait of Malacca, with potential operations in the Middle East looming, especially given the current absence of a U.S. carrier in the region.
On the diplomatic front, the World Economic Forum has rescinded its invitation to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for Davos, citing the ongoing violence. Similarly, the Munich Security Conference has withdrawn its invitations to Iranian officials.
While the Iranian government has not published an official death count, Supreme Leader Khamenei has acknowledged that “several thousand” have perished. A joint statement from the president, judiciary chief, and parliament speaker indicated promises of punishment for anyone involved in “terrorist” acts, but hinted at leniency for others.
The current protests represent the deadliest unrest Iran has faced in decades, reminiscent of the upheaval during the 1979 revolution.
