Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi declared that Tehran will not bow to “language of pressure or threat” over its nuclear program. He emphasized that diplomacy remains Iran’s chosen path in resolving long-standing disputes with Western countries over its nuclear activities.
Several European powers—Britain, France, and Germany (known as the E3)—have initiated a 30-day procedure to reimpose United Nations sanctions, citing concerns that Iran is not complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement. Among the issues are restricted access for nuclear inspectors, stockpiles of enriched uranium, and gaps in dialogue.
As part of the diplomatic effort, the European nations offered Iran a chance to delay the sanctions process for up to six months. To qualify, Iran must restore cooperation with nuclear inspectors, reduce its enriched uranium stockpile, and resume talks with the United States.
Araqchi said that although Western demands are being tested, Iran does not respond to coercive rhetoric. He noted that Iran is using the remaining days before a deadline to pursue diplomatic consultations. Should there be no agreement by the end of the grace period, Iran has stated it will take “appropriate measures.”
Reimposing UN sanctions would increase economic pressure on Iran, which already faces difficulties due to past sanctions and internal discontent. The deadline set by the E3 is at the end of September. Failure to meet their conditions could result in a full reinstatement of international penalties.
Takeaway
This situation underscores a critical moment in Iran-West relations. On one hand, Western powers are pushing for accountability and compliance; on the other, Iran is firm on preserving its nuclear rights while insisting on diplomatic solutions. The next few days may prove decisive for whether tensions escalate or a negotiated agreement is reached.
