Trump Claims Iran Has Put a Stop to Protester Executions

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that he had received information suggesting that Iran has halted the killing of protesters while ceasing planned executions, though he cautioned that verification from the United States is still pending.

During his address at the White House, Trump remarked that “very credible sources on the other side” assured him of a cessation of the killings and that scheduled executions for the day would not proceed. He emphasized that Washington would continue to “monitor the situation closely” before reaching any conclusions, including the possibility of military intervention.

In recent days, Trump has repeatedly warned Iran, indicating that the US may take action to support the Iranian populace following a severe crackdown on widespread protests. Reports from rights organizations indicate that at least 3,428 protesters have lost their lives amid the unrest.

When pressed on whether US military action was still an option, Trump stated, “We’re going to observe and assess the developments.”

Iranian Officials Deny Executions

Responding to the statements, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted there would be “no hangings today or tomorrow” during an interview with US media, accusing Israel of inciting violence within Iran without providing any supporting evidence.

Araghchi noted that the protests, which initially arose from economic grievances on December 28, turned violent between January 7 and 10 due to “external elements” trying to instigate US intervention.

Similarly, Iranian Justice Minister Amin Hossein Rahimi commented that demonstrations after January 7 transformed into criminal acts, claiming that those arrested were engaged in violent activities.

A human rights organization has also confirmed that the execution of 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, who was apprehended during the protests, would not occur as initially scheduled, referencing information from his family.

Global Concerns Increase

The United Nations announced an emergency meeting of the Security Council late Wednesday to deliberate on the Iranian situation, a request put forth by the United States.

Iranian officials claim that the nation is now “firmly in control,” characterizing the situation as calm following what they described as days marked by “terrorist activities.”

However, tensions remain high, with Iran warning of a robust response to any US aggression. A senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remarked that a previous attack on a US base in Qatar demonstrated Iran's capability for retaliation.

In light of rising tensions, multiple countries have implemented precautionary measures: Britain has temporarily shut its embassy in Tehran, Germany’s Lufthansa airline is avoiding Iranian and Iraqi airspace, and US diplomatic personnel in the region have been advised to exercise caution.

Rights Organizations Sound Alarm on Crackdown

Human rights groups report that Iran has enacted one of the most severe crackdowns in recent years, implementing a five-day internet blackout. Amnesty International has accused Iranian authorities of executing mass unlawful killings on an “unprecedented scale.”

Despite limited internet access, verified videos displayed bodies covered in black bags at a Tehran morgue as families searched for their missing loved ones.

Iran Human Rights, an organization based in Norway, stated that over 10,000 individuals have been arrested, with some facing charges that could result in death sentences, including “waging war against God.”

These protests are deemed the largest since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979, raising international alarm regarding human rights, regional stability, and the potential for further escalation.
