Iran, Europe Press On With Nuclear Talks Amid Sanctions Threat

Iran confirmed that talks with three European powers—France, Britain, and Germany (known as the E3)—will carry on, aiming to avert the reimposition of United Nations sanctions. The two sides met on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, with each side exploring proposals to keep negotiations alive.

The Sanctions Deadline Looms

Earlier this month, the E3 triggered a 30-day window to reinstate U.N. sanctions, citing Iran’s failure to comply with elements of the 2015 nuclear deal. That window is set to close on September 27, unless an agreement is reached.

European ministers have floated the idea of delaying the sanctions for up to six months—if Iran agrees to restore access to U.N. nuclear inspectors, address concerns over its enriched uranium stock, and engage in talks with the U.S.

Tehran Pushes Back on Pressure

Iran, however, insists it will maintain sovereignty in negotiations. Its foreign ministry described the European move to reimpose sanctions as “unjustified” and “illegal,” and said that while proposals were discussed, any further diplomacy must respect Iran’s interests.

Hardline Voices Grow Louder

Inside Iran, pressure is mounting. Hardline lawmakers have called for more assertive responses if diplomacy fails. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dismissed direct negotiations with the U.S., calling them a “dead end” and framing them as forced impositions rather than dialogue.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister also criticized Europe’s approach, calling it politically biased and cautioning that Iran may consider “other options” if talks go nowhere.

What’s at Stake

  • If talks fail and sanctions snap back, Iran will face economic and diplomatic isolation.

  • A deal could buy breathing room for diplomacy, but it would require trust on both sides.

  • The coming days are critical: either a compromise must emerge, or the path toward sanctions becomes all but inevitable.
