IPL 2026 Final Moves from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad Amid VIP Ticket Dispute

IPL 2026 Final Moves from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad Amid VIP Ticket Dispute

Post by : Shweta

In a surprising turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has relocated the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad, driven by significant disagreements concerning VIP ticket requests and logistical hurdles. Initially set for the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the final will now occur at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. This shift has ignited political discussions and stirred discontent among cricket enthusiasts in Karnataka.

Reports indicate that the root of the issue lay in excessive demands for complimentary tickets by politicians and government officials. BCCI representatives reportedly faced pressure over free admission requests from MLAs, MLCs, MPs, and other VIP attendees. Given that the Chinnaswamy Stadium accommodates about 40,000 spectators, officials concluded it would be challenging to balance public ticket sales, sponsorship agreements, and demands from VIPs.

According to BCCI vice-president Arun Dhumal, Bengaluru was meant to host the final since the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, typically hold rights for the inaugural match and the finale. However, following talks with the Karnataka State Cricket Association and local authorities, the board recognized that the existing guidelines and protocols made the situation increasingly untenable.

Allegations suggest that nearly 10,000 extra complimentary tickets were requested beyond the usual allocation. BCCI officials deemed these demands unreasonable for a venue with limited seats. They also noted that IPL finals attract international visitors, business partners, sponsors, and ICC officials, intensifying the need for a more spacious venue with a larger ticket capacity.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, which boasts a seating capacity exceeding 1.3 lakh, emerged as a more viable option for such a prestigious event. The stadium has previously hosted several significant cricket finals, including IPL championship matches and ICC tournaments. BCCI officials believe the expansive venue will facilitate superior crowd management, enhanced security measures, and better ticket distribution for fans.

This decision has also sparked political debates in Karnataka, with opposition leaders condemning the state government for allowing “VIP culture” to compromise Bengaluru’s ability to host a major cricket event. Janata Dal (Secular) youth leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy criticized the rising impact of political influence in sports and argued that stadiums should cater to true fans rather than privileged individuals.

However, Karnataka government officials refuted claims that political ticket demands were the cause for the venue change, asserting that Ahmedabad’s larger capacity and commercial benefits likely swayed BCCI’s decision more significantly. They maintained that there were no substantial security incidents during IPL matches held in Bengaluru this season.

Additionally, outside the VIP ticket debate, concerns surrounding crowd management and safety escalated following the unfortunate stampede incident during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory celebrations in 2025. Although local cricket authorities insisted they were equipped to host the final, BCCI officials seemed to favor a venue with improved logistical capabilities and infrastructure tailored for the tournament’s high-stakes match.

Ultimately, the relocation of the final implies that Ahmedabad will host the IPL finale for the fourth time in five years, reinforcing its status as a premier venue for major cricket competitions in India. Meanwhile, numerous fans from Bengaluru took to social media to express their disappointment, lamenting that the city lost out on a significant sporting event due to unwarranted political intrusions and VIP demands.
