Daryl Mitchell's availability is in question for the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies after he sustained a groin injury during his impressive century in Christchurch. He scored 119 off 118 balls, significantly contributing to New Zealand's narrow seven-run win. Post-match, Mitchell remains in Christchurch for scans to evaluate the extent of the injury.
The management has called up experienced left-hander Henry Nicholls as a replacement for the second ODI in Napier scheduled for Wednesday. Nicholls, who has participated in 81 ODIs with his last appearance back in April, is in outstanding form in domestic cricket, currently leading the Ford Trophy with 306 runs at an average of 76.50 and has achieved consecutive centuries this season.
Additionally, Mark Chapman has been brought in as a backup batter. With an impressive average of 101.33 across four ODIs this year, he adds depth to the batting lineup. The inclusion of both Nicholls and Chapman aims to bolster New Zealand’s batting as they face some key player absences.
Mitchell’s remarkable form this season earned him the Player of the Series title in the England series. His innings in Christchurch came under strain, with captain Mitchell Santner commending his resolve, stating, “He is a man for crisis. He played exceptionally well, even when hindered.”
New Zealand is currently missing several players: Mohammad Abbas (rib injury), Finn Allen (foot issue), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring strain), Adam Milne (ankle injury), Will O’Rourke (back issues), Glenn Phillips (groin problem), and Ben Sears (hamstring strain). Furthermore, Kane Williamson has been rested after a minor groin niggle for better preparation ahead of the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.
The combined absence of these team members, alongside Mitchell’s setback, presents a considerable challenge for New Zealand. The squad will depend on its experienced players and the strong domestic performances of newcomers like Nicholls and Chapman to stay competitive.
Despite these challenges, New Zealand demonstrated resilience in the first match, with Mitchell’s critical century marking a thrilling finish. The team hopes for quick recoveries for Mitchell and other injured players to enhance their squad for the remaining ODIs. This series is vital for New Zealand as they aim to maintain momentum ahead of future international engagements, including the upcoming Test matches.
The management is closely monitoring Mitchell's condition to ensure a safe return, avoiding any risk of aggravating the injury. Fans are eagerly watching as the team tackles this tough phase with several key players out of action.
