Norway has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for its first World Cup since 1998, thanks in large part to striker Erling Haaland. The 25-year-old forward from Manchester City netted two goals in Norway’s impressive 4-1 victory against Italy at the San Siro, capping off a remarkable qualifying journey where he scored 16 goals. This tally notably surpasses all other European players in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Haaland’s goal-scoring prowess includes achieving five goals during Norway’s overwhelming 11-1 win over Moldova and maintaining a streak of scoring in all eight qualifying matches. His stellar form has positioned him ahead of notable players like Harry Kane, Memphis Depay, and Marko Arnautovic, all of whom managed eight goals during the campaign.
After the match against Italy, Haaland expressed immense pride in his team. “It was absolutely fantastic. I’m proud we could come here and win 4-1; it shows our unpredictability,” he remarked. His manager, Stale Solbakken, praised Haaland’s remarkable contribution, calling him “a goal machine” for his impressive performance, even earning applause from the Italian fans despite their team's loss.
Beyond his goal tally, Haaland’s stature at six-foot-five makes him a formidable presence on the field, combining strength with skill. This was particularly evident in Norway’s 4-1 win over Estonia, where he delivered a heartfelt halftime speech to uplift his teammates. In a nation of under six million, Haaland's personality and commitment have garnered him widespread admiration, exemplified by murals and even a three-meter tall statue in his hometown of Bryne, which was stolen in 2022.
For Haaland, qualifying for the World Cup represents not just a personal victory but a significant leap for Norwegian football. “We have unlocked potential and improved as individual players,” he asserted, recognizing the emerging talents of players like Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb, who have made appearances for Manchester City. “It’s crucial to appreciate this moment, especially for a small nation like ours. I believe this is the beginning of something remarkable, and we must savor the journey.”
As Norway gears up for the 2026 World Cup across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, Haaland remains pivotal to their aspirations. His scoring talent, leadership, and inspiring presence are set to play a crucial role in Norway’s campaign, with fans eagerly awaiting their team's debut on the world stage. More than just an athlete, Haaland's charisma and unwavering dedication have made him a cherished figure in Norway and beyond, promising an exhilarating path ahead for the national team in the tournament.
