The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially revealed the Indian team for the upcoming one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, commencing on June 6. Highlights include the much-anticipated returns of seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODI series, and the resting of ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Youngster Shubman Gill takes the reins as captain for both the Test and ODI matches, aligning with the team management's plans for long-term leadership. KL Rahul will serve as vice-captain for the Test, with Shreyas Iyer rejoining the ODI squad to assist Gill as his deputy.
Selectors ensured that Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are included in the ODI lineup, although their availability hinges on fitness approvals from the BCCI. This move showcases management's commitment to having experienced athletes ready for a busy international schedule ahead.
A significant decision was made to rest Jasprit Bumrah from both formats to manage his workload effectively. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Bumrah will be preserved for the crucial tour of England later this summer while concentrating on his fitness regimen.
A host of young talents have been rewarded with their first India call-ups due to outstanding performances in domestic tournaments and the IPL. Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, and Manav Suthar have made it to the Test squad, while Prince Yadav is celebrated for his inaugural ODI inclusion. To allow more game time for emerging all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the Test match.
The ODI lineup boasts a robust batting contingent comprised of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Nitish Reddy, with the bowling spearheaded by Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav, alongside promising newcomers. In the Test squad, key players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, and Mohammed Siraj are anticipated to play pivotal roles.
The series against Afghanistan begins with a one-off Test in Mullanpur on June 6, followed by ODIs in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the blend of experienced players and fresh talent stepping onto the international stage.
