Indian Sikh Woman Disappears in Pakistan, Converts and Marries

Chandigarh: Sarabjit Kaur, a 52-year-old Sikh woman from Punjab's Kapurthala, has been reported missing in Pakistan after her pilgrimage, according to recent revelations.

Kaur traveled to Pakistan on November 4 with a group of 1,992 Sikh pilgrims to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev's 555th birth anniversary but did not return with them on November 13.

Documents indicate her conversion to Islam and marriage to Nasir Hussain from Sheikhupura, roughly 56 km from Lahore. An Urdu-written 'nikahnama' suggests she now identifies as 'Noor'. The authenticity of these documents has yet to be substantiated.

Previously divorced, Kaur shares two sons with her ex-husband, Karnail Singh, who has been living in England. There are no immigration records confirming her return to India, raising further questions regarding her whereabouts.

The Indian Immigration Department alerted Punjab Police upon realizing her absence, leading to an inquiry with Pakistani officials regarding her case.

Each year, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) facilitates pilgrimages to historical gurudwaras in Pakistan, particularly during Guru Nanak's Prakash Parv. This year's pilgrimage, after initial security apprehensions, proceeded as planned.

Kaur’s situation has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about the safety of Indian pilgrims in Pakistan.

Authorities are focusing on authenticating the marriage documents while exploring the reasons for Kaur’s choice to remain in Pakistan.
