New Jersey Authorities Charge Indian-Origin Mother with Murder of Two Sons

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a shocking turn of events, a 35-year-old woman of Indian origin has been apprehended in New Jersey, facing charges related to the murder of her two young sons. This unsettling case has left the community in disbelief.

Identified as Priyatharsini Natarajan and residing in Hillsborough Township, Somerset County, the troubling incident unfolded on January 13, as authorities received a distress call from a male individual believed to be the children’s father.

At approximately 6:45 pm, after returning home from work, he reached out to 911, stating that he discovered his two boys—aged just five and seven—unconscious in their home. He suggested that his wife was involved in the tragic incident.

When police arrived, they found both Natarajan and the caller at the residence. Upon entering, officers discovered the children in a bedroom, showing no signs of life.

Despite immediate attempts at resuscitation by emergency medical teams, the boys were declared deceased on the scene.

Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald confirmed on Wednesday that authorities suspect Natarajan was behind the deaths, though the specific circumstances and methods remain undisclosed.

The names of the deceased children have not been made public, with officials stating they will be revealed after identification processes by the Medical Examiner’s Office are completed.

Natarajan is now in custody, facing two counts of first-degree murder, as well as a third-degree charge for possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. Details regarding the alleged weapon have not been released by prosecutors.

After her arrest, she was taken to Somerset County Jail and is set for a detention hearing, where judges will decide her bail status during the trial process.

An extensive investigation is underway, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Hillsborough Township Police Department, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities secured the residence to gather evidence as part of their forensic examination. A postmortem examination has been scheduled to identify the children officially and determine their cause of death, crucial elements in the ongoing criminal case.

Prosecutor McDonald stressed that the investigation continues actively, with more information to be shared when deemed appropriate, as evidence is collected and family associates are interviewed.

This case has ignited serious concerns and drawn attention given the victims' young ages and the challenging nature of the allegations. Local authorities have asked the community to refrain from speculation as legal proceedings continue.

Currently, there's no information regarding potential motives, mental health factors, or any prior interactions with child protective services. These elements will be scrutinized as part of the inquiry.

If found guilty, Natarajan could be facing life imprisonment under New Jersey state law. The legal proceedings are anticipated to unfold in the coming weeks, as prosecutors assemble their case.

Law enforcement officials remain dedicated to executing a thorough investigation while respecting the privacy of the families involved in this tragic situation.
