Shubman Gill will be under pressure to produce a substantial innings as India pursue a 2-1 advantage in the fourth Twenty20 International on Thursday. The contest remains finely poised after three matches, with the previous fixture affected by Josh Hazlewood's absence that aided India in chasing 186.
Australia arrive further depleted with opener Travis Head unavailable while he prepares for Sheffield Shield duty ahead of the Ashes. With two frontline players missing, India have an improved chance to claim the series lead before the finale at the Gabba.
India experimented with personnel in the last game, electing to use an additional all-round option down the order. Yet Gill’s recent returns continue to be a talking point: since the ODIs he has managed scores of 10, 9, 24, 37*, 5 and 15 and has not reached fifty in his last six innings.
Technically Gill has been troubled by fuller deliveries that move slightly, and he has not displayed the consistency that once defined him. By contrast, Abhishek Sharma — currently top-ranked in T20 batting — has contributed a half-century and provided brisk starts. A meaningful knock here would be timely for Gill ahead of the red-ball series in South Africa.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav has shown encouraging signs with positive starts in the opening and third matches and will be keen to build momentum before a month-long break. He is also likely to turn out for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy fixture against Puducherry during the interval.
India’s bowling balance looks healthier with the return of Arshdeep Singh while Kuldeep Yadav has been stood down to prioritise Test preparations. Team management still face selection dilemmas in the spin department, and when Arshdeep is selected the inclusion of Washington Sundar proved decisive — his 23-ball 49 was instrumental in India’s third-match success.
Australia will lean on Mitchell Marsh and Tim David to supply the bulk of the runs. With Head absent, Matthew Short is expected to partner Marsh at the top. Their bowling attack may see adjustments: Sean Abbott’s recent form is under review and potential alternatives include Ben Dwarshuis or Mahli Beardman.
India: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill (VC), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (WK), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar
Australia: Mitchell Marsh (C), Matthew Short, Josh Inglis (WK), Josh Phillippe (WK), Mitchell Owen, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Kuhnemann, Adam Zampa, Mahli Beardman, Ben Dwarshuis, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Marcus Stoinis
