Devastating Impact of Cyclone Senyar in Aceh Leaves 22 Villages Obliterated

Post by : Mina Rahman

Aceh has experienced catastrophic destruction following the arrival of Cyclone Senyar in late November. Reports indicate that at least 22 villages have been entirely obliterated by extensive flooding and landslides, with many communities still inaccessible.

The Gayo Lues regency faced the most severe destruction, losing eight villages to torrential floodwaters. The Aceh Tamiang regency also suffered significantly, with five villages rendered uninhabitable by the calamity.

Authorities confirmed that entire communities have been buried under mud and debris, resulting in several fatalities and the evacuation of numerous residents to safer locations.

As of now, nearly 15,000 residents across 30 villages in Aceh remain isolated more than a month post-cyclone. These areas span several regencies, including Gayo Lues, Aceh Tamiang, Bener Meriah, North Aceh, East Aceh, and Southeast Aceh.

Due to obstructed roads and bridges, emergency responders have resorted to helicopters and boats to provide food, medical care, and relief supplies. Heavy machinery is being utilized to clear the debris and restore access routes, though the pace is slow.

Volunteers who reached some of the most affected areas reported harrowing conditions. In one remote village, residents have been surviving on minimal food, with the only remaining structure being a mosque, now surrounded by mud and destruction.

Numerous families sought refuge on nearby hills during the disaster and continue to live there in temporary shelters, hesitant to return home due to fears of further flooding.

Cyclone Senyar made its landfall on November 25, unleashing torrential rainfall and fierce winds that caused widespread flooding and landslides across Aceh and surrounding provinces. Millions have been impacted, with over a thousand lives lost, injuries reported, and many individuals still missing.

Aceh continues to be the most severely affected province, facing extensive destruction of homes, roads, and bridges. Ongoing heavy rainfall during the rainy season has triggered additional flooding, further complicating rescue and rebuilding efforts.
