Hot Air Balloon Crash in Turkey Kills Pilot, Hurts 31 Tourists

Post by : Bandanpreet Kaur

A tragic hot air balloon accident happened in central Turkey on Sunday. The crash killed the pilot and injured 19 tourists from Indonesia. The balloon went down near the village of Gozlukuyu, in the Aksaray province, after the wind suddenly changed direction.

According to the local governor, Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu, the pilot sadly died during the landing. He fell out of the balloon basket and got caught in a rope. He was then trapped under the basket and died on the spot.

Emergency teams quickly reached the area and helped the injured tourists. They were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. A video from the scene showed the balloon lying flat on the ground as rescuers worked to help people.

Hot air ballooning is a very popular tourist activity in central Turkey. Many visitors go to places like Cappadocia to see the beautiful “fairy chimneys” — tall, unique rock formations — and ancient churches carved into cliffs. This area is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In a separate incident, another hot air balloon taking off from the same area — Ilhara Valley — had a hard landing earlier that day. In this second crash, 12 Indian tourists got hurt, but their injuries were minor.

Sadly, this is not the first time something like this has happened. In 2022, two tourists from Spain died in another hot air balloon crash in Cappadocia. These events raise concerns about the safety of such rides.

Officials have started a full investigation to find out why both balloons crashed. They are now checking all details to help prevent such accidents in the future.
