Hong Kong's New Year Fireworks Canceled After November Tragedy

Hong Kong's New Year Fireworks Canceled After November Tragedy

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant departure from tradition, Hong Kong will not host its iconic New Year fireworks over Victoria Harbor as it welcomes 2026. This rare occurrence follows a tragic fire in November that resulted in the loss of at least 161 lives.

Instead of the expected fireworks, the Hong Kong Tourism Board plans to organize a music event in Central on New Year's Eve. Highlighting the lineup will be performances from the beloved duo Air Supply along with other artists. The evening will culminate at midnight with a stunning light show, transforming the facades of eight key landmarks into countdown clocks.

Fireworks have been a staple in Hong Kong's festive celebrations, spanning New Year’s, Lunar New Year, and National Day. These breathtaking displays typically attract large crowds of both residents and visitors who gather along the harbor to enjoy the vibrant colors against the city’s picturesque skyline.

Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, highlighted that the cancellation of the fireworks would affect local hotels and restaurants, which depend significantly on the holiday influx of tourists.

This decision comes in the wake of the deadliest fire incident in the city since 1948, which occurred at the Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po district. The fire spread rapidly through a building undergoing renovations, fueled by inadequate bamboo scaffolding, green netting, and foam boards. Many displaced residents are now living in temporary accommodations, grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

Historically, Hong Kong has suspended fireworks displays after other major tragedies, including a vessel collision in 2012 resulting in 39 fatalities, a bus accident in 2018, the 2019 protests, and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fireworks, which originated in China, date back to the second century B.C. They were initially created by throwing bamboo stalks into the fire to produce loud explosions. The Tang dynasty monk Li Tian is recognized for inventing the first documented firecracker, using hollow bamboo filled with gunpowder to drive away evil spirits during festivities.
