Keisuke Honda, a prominent figure in Japanese football, has conveyed his confidence regarding his nation’s prospects in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at the AVCJ Private Equity Forum in Hong Kong, he expressed hopes that Japan can advance to the semifinals or potentially clinch the championship.
Honda underscored the quality of the national team, pointing out that they possess the capability to stand toe-to-toe with leading global teams, stating, “They have the potential to reach at least the top four in the World Cup next year, maybe as champions. Nothing is impossible, and the quality of the players is promising, so I’m optimistic about their journey.”
Japan has already guaranteed its spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The previous World Cup held in Qatar in 2022 witnessed Japan making headlines after overcoming major European rivals like Spain and Germany, showcasing their ongoing growth in competitive football.
At 39, Honda is hailed as one of the most successful Japanese footballers of the early 2000s, flaunting a career that included stints at esteemed clubs, notably AC Milan in Italy’s Serie A. His international journey spans across three World Cups, marking a significant contribution to elevating Japan’s status in global football.
In addition to his prowess on the field, Honda is also an accomplished entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He co-founded X&KSK, an investment firm focused on Japan, successfully raising roughly 15.3 billion yen in its inaugural fund this year, targeting startups in technology, consumer goods, and biotechnology. Furthermore, he partnered with American actor Will Smith to co-found Dreamers VC in the U.S.
While his sights may be set on new business ventures, Honda’s football aspirations remain intact. He aims to become a top football coach, eyeing the coveted World Cup championship as a coach for Japan. He expressed, “My future dreams include being not only the best investor globally but also the finest coach, aiming for World Cup success as a coach.”
Honda’s statements reflect a deep-seated belief in the advancement of Japanese football and the potential for global success. He emphasized the critical roles of teamwork, player development, and effective leadership. With a gifted cohort of players and increasing exposure in international competitions, Japan is poised to leave a mark on the 2026 tournament.
Analysts and fans have welcomed Honda’s positive outlook, acknowledging Japan’s steady upward trajectory in recent World Cups. His potential future role as a coach could further enhance the national team’s aspirations.
Honda’s vision encapsulates not only his faith in the current squad but also his desire to be an integral part of football, both as a player and future coach. His dual pursuits in business and football highlight a steadfast commitment to excellence in all endeavors.
