Australia has received an encouraging boost ahead of the first Ashes Test in Perth starting Friday, as all-rounder Cameron Green confirms he is fit to bowl without any limitations. The 26-year-old had been recovering from a side strain sustained last month, which followed a significant back injury in 2024 that sidelined him from bowling at the Test level. Green's return is timely as Australia grapples with injuries to captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood.
At an Ashes launch event at Perth Stadium on Tuesday, Green remarked, “I feel really good. It’s been a slow buildup. I would have liked a few more competitive overs, but there are no restrictions, and once you step into Test cricket, you don’t need them. I’m ready to step up whenever needed.”
Standing at 198 centimeters, Green is likely to secure the all-rounder position over Beau Webster after impressively scoring 94 in his last Sheffield Shield match at the WACA. While he awaits confirmation on his batting order, he has expressed flexibility, having mostly played at number six but feeling comfortable higher up. His highest score of 174 not out against New Zealand at number four showcases his versatility.
“The selectors met last night, so I expect to know more later today. Regardless of the decision, we have a fantastic squad with great combinations to rely on,” Green stated, expressing gratitude for the team's trust in his abilities across various batting positions.
Selectors face a crucial decision regarding the inclusion of a specialist opener alongside Usman Khawaja or opting for a makeshift choice like Marnus Labuschagne, who has netted five domestic centuries this season. The final team composition will be vital in balancing batting and bowling strategies against a formidable England side.
Green recognized England's aggressive play style, termed 'Bazball' under the guidance of coach Brendon McCullum. “We haven’t witnessed it in Australia before. An aggressive approach can invite risks for both teams, but it also applies pressure back on them. It’s an intriguing brand of cricket, and we’ll see how it unfolds,” he reflected.
The upcoming series is keenly awaited, as England last secured an Ashes victory in Australia back in 2015, while Australia aims to protect its home turf. Green’s fitness and ability to contribute with bat and ball will be pivotal for Australia’s strategy during the five-match series. His return is a reassuring signal for both the team and fans, underlining the depth and resilience of the Australian squad ahead of the opening Test in Perth.
