High-Altitude JeM Bunker Unearthed in Kishtwar Mountains

High-Altitude JeM Bunker Unearthed in Kishtwar Mountains

Post by : Mina Rahman

In the unforgiving mountains of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian security forces have located a well-protected terrorist bunker associated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). This hideout is situated at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, where survival in such extreme conditions is exceedingly challenging.

The bunker, concealed for months, features a Kargil-style construction with sturdy stone walls and multiple access points, designed to endure gunfire and military assaults.

Inside, authorities discovered ample preparations for a prolonged winter, including around 50 packets of instant noodles, 20 kilograms of high-quality basmati rice, fresh vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes, grains, cooking gas cylinders, dry firewood, and nearly 15 varieties of spices—enough provisions to sustain the occupants for months.

It is believed that this hideout served a senior JeM commander, Saifullah, along with his deputy, Adil, indicating a high level of strategic planning and logistical support in the construction.

On Sunday, as troops approached the site, the terrorists attempted to thwart their progress by launching grenades, resulting in injuries to seven soldiers. Havildar Gajendra Singh later succumbed to his wounds, marking a tragic sacrifice in service.

The bunker’s discovery has shed light on a local support network, as constructing such a resilient facility and moving substantial supplies to a location as elevated as this would likely have required assistance from nearby residents. Four locals are currently under detention for questioning as investigations continue.

The ongoing anti-terror operation, termed Operation Trashi-I, has entered its third day, with security forces diligently searching forested regions and mountain areas to apprehend the terrorists.

This operation follows previous counter-terror initiatives launched in December aimed at neutralizing around thirty terrorists hiding in the Jammu region’s dense forests.

As Republic Day approaches, security has been escalated, with intelligence warnings regarding attempts by operatives across the border to infiltrate additional terrorists into the region. These intensified measures are deemed essential to safeguard public safety and ensure peaceful national celebrations.

The uncovering of this high-altitude bunker is being recognized as a significant triumph for security forces and a substantial blow to the terrorist factions operating in the remote mountains of Jammu and Kashmir.
