Severe winter weather brought major disruption to parts of Poland as heavy snowfall caused long traffic jams and left hundreds of drivers stranded in freezing conditions. The worst situation was reported on the S7 motorway, which connects the capital city Warsaw with the northern port city of Gdansk.
According to police, snowfall intensified late Tuesday afternoon, making road conditions extremely dangerous. Trucks struggled to climb icy slopes, and once a few large vehicles became stuck, traffic began to slow and then stop completely. By nightfall, the traffic jam had stretched to nearly 20 kilometers, trapping drivers in their cars for hours.
Many people were caught off guard by how quickly conditions worsened. Temperatures dropped sharply, and snow continued to fall through the night. Drivers, including families and truck operators, were forced to wait in long lines with limited movement. Police said that although the situation was difficult, no injuries were reported.
Local police officers worked throughout the night to manage the situation and assist stranded motorists. In the town of Ostroda, located along the affected highway, officers distributed hot tea and coffee to drivers. The refreshments were prepared with the help of the city hall, offering some comfort to those stuck in the cold.
Authorities said traffic slowly began moving again by early Wednesday morning after snow-clearing teams managed to improve road conditions. Snowplows and emergency services worked together to reopen blocked sections and guide vehicles safely through the area.
The heavy snowfall also caused disruptions beyond road travel. State media reported delays and minor disruptions at some railway services and airports. However, by Wednesday, most services were returning to normal as weather conditions improved and cleanup efforts continued.
Deputy Infrastructure Minister Stanislaw Bukowiec confirmed that despite the long delays and harsh conditions, there were no reports of injuries or serious accidents. He praised emergency workers and local authorities for their quick response and coordination.
The incident highlights how sudden winter weather can bring major challenges to transport systems, even in countries accustomed to cold conditions. Officials urged drivers to stay updated on weather warnings, prepare emergency supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe snowstorms.
As winter continues across Europe, authorities in Poland remain on alert for more snowfall in the coming weeks, reminding the public that safety must come first during extreme weather events.
