Harvard University has reported unauthorized access to a significant database following a phone phishing attack that occurred earlier this week. This data breach has compromised personal details of alumni, donors, certain students, and faculty members. The incident, occurring on Tuesday, involved sensitive information associated with fundraising and alumni engagement efforts.
According to university officials, the breached database contained contact information, donation details, and similar records. Although academic systems and financial accounts remain secure, the leaked personal information raises severe concerns for many connected to the institution.
As the oldest and richest university in the U.S., Harvard typically raises over a billion dollars annually. This incident marks the second cybersecurity probe initiated by the university in 2025. Previously, in October, Harvard investigated reports of data being compromised in a larger hacking operation impacting users of a well-known software company.
Tim Bailey, Communications Director at Harvard University Information Technology, stated that immediate action was taken upon discovering the breach. Access was quickly revoked, and cybersecurity teams have been deployed to bolster system defenses. The university is also collaborating with law enforcement as the inquiry progresses.
Harvard is not the sole Ivy League institution confronting cyber threats. Other prestigious universities have reported similar breaches recently. For instance, Princeton University disclosed that on November 15, one of its databases containing details about alumni, donors, and community associates was compromised. Furthermore, on October 31, the University of Pennsylvania experienced breaches involving systems linked to alumni and development activities.
In addition, Columbia University's cybersecurity incident in June affected nearly 870,000 individuals, including students and applicants, with personal data being exposed.
Cybersecurity specialists claim that American universities continue to be appealing targets due to the extensive personal and financial data they store. As notable attacks affect multiple elite institutions, there is increasing pressure for universities to enhance digital defenses and safeguard sensitive information more effectively.
