Gulf Region Advocates for Unified Defence and Strong Media Post-Iran Ceasefire

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The Dubai Press Club (DPC) recently convened an online discussion titled “The Gulf in the Aftermath of the Iran Ceasefire”, as part of its ongoing series, engaging prominent voices to address pressing issues in the region.

Notable participants included Kuwaiti media figure Mohammed Al-Mulla and Bahraini writer Sawsan Al-Sha’er, with moderation by Mohammed Al-Ahmed from Abu Dhabi Media Network.

The dialogue centered around the changing dynamics in the Gulf as the world watches the de-escalation following the Iran ceasefire. The speakers underscored the vital role of media in tackling challenges faced by Arab Gulf nations.

Highlighting the media's influence, they argued it fosters awareness, instills values of loyalty, and guides younger populations. Gulf states are heavily investing in youth and human capital, which they regard as a strategy for long-term stability and resilience.

Al-Mulla insisted on the establishment of a collaborative Gulf defence force, marking it as critical for future security. He asserted that cooperation is essential for safeguarding Gulf nations.

Additionally, Al-Sha’er pointed out the necessity for a cohesive defensive strategy. While acknowledging that Gulf states have addressed recent threats, including those related to Iran, she emphasized the need for a united response moving forward.

She noted the inadequacy of containment policies toward Iran, referring to the discovery of proxy sleeper cells within the region. Al-Sha’er called for enhanced coordination and rigorous law enforcement to address these threats effectively.

On the media's role, Al-Mulla described it as integral to “geopolitical defence,” underlining its significance in counteracting misinformation and extremist views. He stressed the need to educate youth and fortify their grasp of facts.

The session concluded with a call to strengthen the pan-Gulf media landscape and create a clear ethical framework to foster responsible journalism and combat misinformation within the region.
