Louvre Abu Dhabi has opened the second round of its 2026 Fellowships and Grants Programme, reinforcing its commitment to fostering innovative research in art history, museum studies, and heritage science. Building on the positive feedback from the inaugural 2025 edition, this new cycle aims to further the museum's goal of enhancing knowledge through cross-cultural academic exchange.
The programme seeks scholars worldwide to propose research that aligns with the museum’s extensive collection, archives, and research facilities. Intended to stimulate original thought, this initiative aspires to deepen understanding of global artistic interrelations and promotes studies that transcend conventional narratives.
Applications are accepted until 7 February 2026, with a panel of esteemed experts undertaking the review process. Announcement of the selected fellows will occur in May 2026.
The 2026 call emphasizes three central themes. The first, Global History of Museums and Collections, examines the evolution of museums across diverse cultures and the impact of collecting practices, exhibition strategies, and visitor engagement in defining the concept of universal museums.
The second theme, Circulation of Styles, Images and Texts, delves into how artistic ideas, objects, and visual languages have been disseminated through trade, migration, and cultural interactions, illustrating their influence on artistic growth across various regions and eras.
The final theme, Precious Materials and Routes of Exchange, investigates the flow of materials and craftsmanship through historic trade routes—from the Silk Roads to maritime pathways—highlighting how these exchanges have enriched artistic creation.
Researchers selected for the programme will have access to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Resource Centre and its advanced Scientific Laboratory, the first of its kind in the Gulf area. These facilities provide cutting-edge tools for material research, conservation projects, and art historical studies. Fellows will also engage in internal workshops and collaborative sessions with the museum community.
Both short-term (three months) and long-term (nine months) fellowships are offered, encouraging applications from scholars within the region as well as internationally. Proposals must be submitted in English via the museum's official website.
The 2026 programme signifies another advancement in Louvre Abu Dhabi’s initiative to enhance global research networks and foster work that revisits artistic histories through a broader, interconnected perspective.
