Under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai is prepared to host a historic congregation of museum experts as the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) commences tomorrow. This event marks a significant first for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region, emphasizing Dubai’s role as a burgeoning global hub for culture and creativity.
Centered around the theme, “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” this week-long gathering will unite over 4,500 attendees, including museum directors, policymakers, and academics from around the globe. The discussions aim to assess how museums can adapt to shifting social, technological, and environmental landscapes, while promoting inclusivity, innovation, and cultural understanding.
With over 400 speakers and 100 dialogue sessions, the conference will address topics like Youth Empowerment, Intangible Heritage, and New Technologies, representing the dynamic convergence of heritage and the digital age. Keynote presentations will feature prominent cultural figures such as Medea S. Ekner of ICOM, Krista Pikkat from UNESCO, and Dr. Peter Magee of Zayed National Museum.
Among fascinating topics, the session titled “AI and Museums: From Vision to Global Action” will focus on how artificial intelligence can transform museum experiences and audience interactions. Another important dialogue, “Nature as Partner: The Power of Restoration,” will delve into sustainability and the role museums play in fostering environmental consciousness.
The conference will also include discussions on the Revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums, an essential session tackling the illicit trafficking of cultural artifacts, alongside the inaugural ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums, recognizing impactful global initiatives aimed at fostering positive change.
Complementary to the dialogues, the Museum Fair will host over 100 exhibitors presenting cutting-edge technological solutions, design concepts, and innovative partnerships that define the future of museology. Additional training sessions and workshops will provide professionals with practical knowledge to explore novel strategies for sustainable and digitally-connected museums.
By hosting ICOM 2025, Dubai solidifies its stature as a leading forum for cultural conversation and innovation, bridging global heritage with vision for the future. This event not only honors the evolving responsibilities of museums but also reiterates Dubai’s dedication to fostering creativity, knowledge sharing, and sustainable cultural initiatives on a global platform.
