Authorities in Germany have taken into custody a married couple for their alleged involvement in espionage activities on behalf of China, aiming to acquire sensitive data related to advanced military technologies. These arrests took place in Munich as part of a broader investigation into national security, believed to be connected to Chinese intelligence efforts.
The suspects, named only as Xuejun C. and Hua S. by Germany’s federal prosecution service, are suspected of acting under the direction of a Chinese intelligence agency. Officials assert that they tried to gather information pertaining to fields such as aerospace engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence, all of which have potential military usages.
Reports indicate that the couple formed connections with academics and researchers at various German universities and scientific institutions over an extended timeframe. Prosecutors allege that they employed false identities—posing as interpreters and automobile industry employees—to infiltrate expert circles and research communities.
Furthermore, it has been suggested that several German scientists were lured to China under the guise of giving civilian lectures. Investigators claim that portions of these trips actually involved presentations to individuals affiliated with state-owned Chinese defense firms and military-related organizations.
Following the arrests, German police and intelligence agents executed searches at the couple’s residences and workplaces in Munich. Additional investigative actions took place in Berlin and other locations, involving around ten individuals who are regarded as potential witnesses in this expansive inquiry.
This case has heightened concerns in Germany and across Europe regarding foreign espionage threats aimed at strategic technologies and defense-related research. Security analysts have issued warnings that sectors such as artificial intelligence, aerospace technology, semiconductors, and cybersecurity are significant targets for international espionage.
While authorities have yet to disclose comprehensive details about the evidence collected, there has been no official statement from Chinese officials as of this report's publication. The investigation continues as prosecutors delve deeper into potential links between the suspects and foreign intelligence networks.
These apprehensions occur amidst escalating global tensions regarding technology security and allegations of foreign interference in scientific research across Europe and the West.
