The French government has strongly spoken out against Iran for keeping two of its citizens in prison for three years. The couple, Cécile Kohler and her partner Jacques Paris, were arrested in Iran in 2022. They are being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison, a place known for holding political prisoners and foreigners.
Why Were They Arrested?
Cécile and Jacques went to Iran as tourists, but Iran's government accused them of spying and trying to start protests against the Iranian authorities. Iran said they were involved in actions that threatened the country’s security.
France, however, has always denied these claims. French officials say the couple is innocent and was simply visiting Iran. France believes the arrest was unfair and that Iran is using the couple as political pawns in a larger power struggle.
What France Is Saying
On the third anniversary of the couple's arrest, the French Foreign Ministry released a strong statement. It said that the detention was "unjust and unacceptable." They also said that the charges were false and had no proof behind them.
French officials demanded the immediate release of Cécile and Jacques. They also said that Iran must stop using foreign nationals as tools for pressure or negotiation.
Where Are They Now?
Both Cécile and Jacques are locked in Evin Prison, where they have been kept since their arrest in May 2022. Human rights groups have raised concerns about the conditions inside the prison. Reports say the couple has not been given a fair trial or proper legal help.
Family members and supporters in France are worried about their health and safety. They have spoken to the media, asking for more international help to bring them back home.
Iran’s Side
Iran has not changed its position. Officials in Iran say the couple broke the law and that their arrest was based on solid information. They have not responded directly to France’s latest demand, but in the past, Iran has accused Western countries of interfering in its internal matters.
Iran has also arrested other foreigners in recent years, including people from the U.S., the U.K., and Germany. Many of these arrests happened during times when tensions between Iran and Western countries were high. Some believe Iran uses these arrests to gain political leverage.
A Bigger Problem
This situation has added to the already tense relationship between France and Iran. Talks between Iran and Western countries over issues like nuclear programs and sanctions have also not gone well. France’s anger over this arrest shows how much pressure is building.
What Happens Next?
France says it will continue to fight for the couple’s release. Their families are also hoping for support from the international community. Human rights groups are calling for Iran to stop arresting innocent visitors and using them in political games.
This case has become a symbol of how people can get caught up in political fights between countries—even when they are just tourists.
