Kim Keon Hee, the former First Lady of South Korea, has received a 20-month prison sentence for corruption as ruled by the Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday.
The court determined that Kim was guilty of accepting lavish gifts, such as a Graff diamond necklace and a Chanel handbag, from the Unification Church in return for political favors. The judges expressed that she misused her role as First Lady for her own benefit.
In a statement conveyed through her lawyers, Kim expressed her remorse, stating she "humbly accepts" the ruling and regrets any public distress it may have caused.
Initially, prosecutors sought a 15-year sentence on charges that included stock price manipulation, illegal political funding, and bribery. However, the court dismissed two charges due to insufficient evidence. The prosecution plans to contest the ruling, deeming the sentence overly lenient.
Kim has been in detention since August, following the court's approval of her arrest over fears that she might tamper with evidence. Her controversies posed significant political challenges for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, contributing to a decline in his approval ratings.
Yoon was ousted from his position after proclaiming martial law in December 2024 and was sentenced to five years in prison earlier this month for related offenses. He now awaits a verdict on a rebellion charge that could potentially lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
According to investigators, Kim was not involved in the martial law strategy. Authorities suggest that Yoon had been plotting for more than a year to enforce military rule against political adversaries, yet no evidence ties Kim to that initiative.
Experts indicated that Yoon is more likely to face a life imprisonment term or an extended sentence, as South Korea has not executed anyone since 1997.
