flydubai Secures 60 GE Engines for Upcoming 787 Fleet

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The Dubai-based budget airline, flydubai, is taking a significant step into long-haul aviation by purchasing 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace. These engines will power the airline's inaugural fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, marking an important transition from its traditional 737 operations.

Announced at the Dubai Airshow 2025, this deal includes additional spare engines and a long-term service agreement to ensure robust operational efficiency as the airline prepares to broaden its network to new global horizons. Since its inception in 2008, flydubai has surged to offer flights to over 135 destinations across 57 countries, with this development representing a critical step in its ambitions for long-distance travel.

Renowned for their fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, the Boeing 787-9s will enable flydubai to cater to increasing demand while broadening its service portfolio. The GEnx-1B engines, noted for their reliability and performance in diverse operational environments, have already surpassed 62 million flight hours globally, powering approximately two-thirds of the existing 787 fleet.

This aircraft-engine pairing allows flydubai to enhance fuel efficiency and maintain essential operational reliability, vital for pursuing growth on both regional and international routes. This investment showcases the airline’s focus on innovation and growth, while also adapting to changing passenger expectations.

With the arrival of the first 787s anticipated in the coming years, flydubai is poised to transform its long-haul service, providing passengers with extended connectivity and improved travel choices through the central aviation hub of Dubai.
