Helicopter Disaster in Dagestan Claims Lives of Five Officials

Post by : Raina Nasser

Tragedy struck in the Republic of Dagestan as a helicopter crash took the lives of at least five individuals, including four high-ranking executives from a Russian military facility. This unfortunate event transpired near the Caspian Sea on November 7, involving a Ka-226 helicopter that was transporting workers from the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, which has been sanctioned by the EU.

Social media footage depicted the helicopter attempting a landing on a beach, where it collided with a rock, resulting in the severing of its rear rotor. Consequently, the helicopter lost stability and its tail hung dangerously, eventually crashing into an unoccupied private residence in the Achi-Su village, igniting a fire that obliterated the beachfront property. Emergency teams were promptly dispatched to control the flames, which left the structure in ruins.

The Kizlyar Plant has confirmed that among those who perished were four of its employees, including Achalo Magomedov, the organization's deputy general director responsible for construction and transport support. The crash also claimed the life of a Ka-226 flight mechanic, while two others suffered injuries.

Initial investigations suggest that the incident was due to a "technical malfunction" without signs of sabotage or human error. Rosaviatsia, Russia's federal aviation agency, has labeled the occurrence a "disaster" and will be involved in the formal inquiry.

Sanctioned by the EU in 2024 for its role in producing military aircraft components for Russia, the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant specializes in aircraft ground control and diagnostic systems, as well as onboard equipment. Notably, it manufactures the DZ-UM lock, a bomb rack utilized by SU-25 fighter jets extensively deployed in Russian military actions in Ukraine.

Ongoing investigations are delving into the technical issues that led to the rotor disconnection, raising significant concerns regarding helicopter safety standards and the operational hazards faced by personnel in defense-sector organizations across Russia.
