The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the five actors vying for its distinct Rising Star Award, the only BAFTA accolade determined by public votes. This announcement marks a significant event for up-and-coming talent in the film industry, creating excitement ahead of the prestigious BAFTA Film Awards.
The nominees represent a diverse mix of backgrounds and countries, each having captured the attention of both critics and audiences with notable performances over the last year. Included in the shortlist are British talents Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling, alongside American actors Infiniti and Caton, and British performer Aramayo.
What sets the Rising Star Award apart from other BAFTA honors is its public voting system, inviting fans to back the actor they fancy has exhibited extraordinary promise and on-screen impact. This award has historically aided in propelling the careers of stars who later achieved international fame.
Infiniti earns her nomination due to her compelling portrayal in the commendable film *One Battle After Another*, where she plays Willa, a character entangled in a kidnapping scenario involving Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. Despite the established presence, Infiniti’s heartfelt performance has drawn ample praise, noted for its depth of emotion embodying fear, courage, and resoluteness, securing her spot as a prominent new talent this year.
Caton, another American candidate, garnered acclaim for his debut role in *Sinners*. Transitioning from music to on-screen acting, he delivers a heartfelt portrayal as Sammie, a blues musician facing personal adversities. Critics have celebrated his natural charisma and emotional resonance on screen as remarkable.
UK actor Aramayo shines in *I Swear*, a film tackling real-world activism, where he embodies the role of John Davidson, a Scottish advocate raising awareness about Tourette syndrome. His sensitive and authentic performance has drawn attention, illuminating conditions often overlooked, with the film hailed for its compelling social commentary.
Archie Madekwe's inclusion stems from his riveting performance in the thriller *Lurker*, portraying Oliver, a burgeoning pop star caught in a perilous situation. Critics noted how Madekwe effectively portrays both the allure and burdens of fame, balancing charisma with vulnerability.
Completing the list is Posy Sterling, recognized for her role in *Lollipop*. Sterling plays Molly, a young mother grappling with reintegration into life after incarceration while caring for her child. Her portrayal has been widely praised for its raw emotional depth, showcasing the hurdles faced by women in similar situations.
The Rising Star Award winner will be unveiled during the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on February 22, joining a notable roster of previous winners like Tom Holland and Daniel Kaluuya, who subsequently soared to global stardom.
Additionally, BAFTA confirmed that the complete list of nominees for the 2026 Film Awards will be disclosed on January 27, further escalating anticipation as the Rising Star Award spotlights the future generation of cinematic talents.
