Manila, Philippines – Tragically, the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, a passenger ferry belonging to Aleson Shipping Lines, sank early on Monday (January 26, 2026) while it was en route from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu.
Initial reports from the Philippine Coast Guard confirm that at least 15 individuals have lost their lives. At the time of the incident, the vessel was carrying approximately 332 passengers alongside 27 crew members.
The ferry reportedly encountered severe technical difficulties and capsized off the coast of Basilan, close to Baluk-Baluk Island. Survivors have alleged that the ship might have developed a breach in its hull, leading to swift water ingress and its subsequent sinking.
Rescue operations are currently underway, spearheaded by the Philippine Coast Guard, the Navy, local authorities, and nearby fishing boats. More than 200 passengers have been saved, but several remain unaccounted for. Medical teams are providing care for the injured at local hospitals.
Investigation into the sinking is ongoing. The Philippines, with its extensive maritime network, has experienced a history of ferry disasters stemming from adverse weather and safety concerns. In 2023, a ferry fire led to the deaths of over 30 individuals in the southern region of the country.
Search and rescue crews will continue their efforts as more information becomes available.
