Dramatic Weather Changes Mark the Start of 2026 in the US

Post by : Mina Rahman

As 2026 commenced, the United States experienced a remarkable display of weather extremes, with heavy rain affecting Southern California’s New Year’s Day events while other regions grappled with snow, strong winds, and plummeting temperatures.

In Pasadena, steady rainfall drenched the renowned Rose Parade, which saw significant rain for the first time in nearly two decades. Marching bands, ornamental floats, and a multitude of spectators along the nearly six-mile parade route became drenched as one to two inches of rain fell throughout the morning. By the time the parade commenced at 8 a.m., temperatures were around 58°F (14°C).

Despite the unfavorable weather, the parade proceeded largely on schedule. Organizers made minor adjustments, including shielding open-top vehicles for prominent figures and guests. Large crowds still gathered in person, while millions more tuned in via television.

Weather agencies issued flood watches throughout California, along with coastal flood advisories for certain parts of the Pacific coastline. Residents in areas already vulnerable due to last year's wildfires near Los Angeles faced evacuation warnings due to potential flooding and debris flows from the intense rainfall.

On the East Coast, New Year’s celebrations took place amid significantly colder conditions. In New York City, temperatures were near freezing, marking one of the coldest New Year’s starts in nearly a decade. Revelers attending outdoor festivities bundled up against the frigid air as winter weather dominated the landscape.

Meanwhile, regions in the Midwest and Northeast dealt with an Alberta clipper storm succeeded by an Arctic front. Snow squalls, gusty winds, and rapidly shifting weather conditions impacted states like Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and New England, creating challenging travel scenarios.

Air travel faced significant disruptions as weather-related delays accumulated. Approximately one-quarter of flights departing from major airports in San Diego and Boston were delayed, compounding the hurdles for travelers at the year’s onset.

From the rain-soaked festivities in California to the freezing temperatures and snow affecting the Midwest and Northeast, extreme weather conditions dramatically set the stage for the first day of 2026 across the United States.
