Early on Saturday, residents of Caracas, Venezuela, reported seeing a large column of smoke and hearing multiple loud explosions across the city. Witnesses described airplanes flying overhead, and power outages were reported in the southern parts of the capital, close to a major military base. Videos circulating on social media showed flashes and plumes of smoke in different areas of the city, though the authenticity and exact locations of the videos could not be independently verified.
The cause of the explosions and disturbances remains unclear. Venezuelan authorities have not provided official information, leaving citizens and observers uncertain about the situation. The disturbances come amid ongoing political and military tensions between Venezuela and the United States.
In recent months, the U.S. has carried out an intense campaign of pressure on Venezuela. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down and has privately urged him to leave power. As part of this campaign, the U.S. has deployed an aircraft carrier, warships, and advanced fighter jets in the Caribbean region. Washington has also imposed an oil blockade, expanded sanctions, and conducted targeted strikes on vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking in the Pacific and Caribbean waters.
Last week, Trump stated that U.S. forces had struck an area in Venezuela used to load boats carrying drugs, marking a significant escalation in military pressure. While he did not provide details about who carried out the strikes, media reports suggest involvement by U.S. intelligence agencies. Maduro’s government has consistently denied involvement in drug trafficking, and international observers have criticized the strikes as extrajudicial actions.
The current situation in Caracas highlights the precarious state of security in Venezuela’s capital, where ordinary citizens face the risk of violence amid escalating geopolitical tensions. Analysts note that the combination of local instability, international pressure, and military build-up in the region could worsen humanitarian conditions and further disrupt daily life for Venezuelans.
At this time, the international community is closely monitoring developments in Caracas. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors and avoid areas near military installations until authorities provide clarity. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the recent explosions were isolated incidents or part of broader military activity connected to ongoing U.S.-Venezuela tensions.
