EU Leaders Meet on Russia Sanctions, US Tariffs, Middle East

The leaders of all 27 countries in the European Union are coming together in Brussels for a very important meeting on Thursday. They have a lot to talk about—like putting stronger punishments on Russia, stopping new taxes from the United States, and dealing with problems happening in the Middle East.

Before this meeting, most of the leaders had just come from another big event—a NATO meeting—where they agreed to spend more money on defense and try to get along better with US President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join the EU meeting through video, just one day after meeting Trump in person. Even though NATO doesn’t seem to be focusing on Ukraine as much right now, the war with Russia is still a very big worry for Europe.

At the summit, the EU may decide to go ahead with an 18th round of sanctions against Russia. They’re also talking about keeping a limit on how much countries can pay for Russian oil. But not everyone agrees because this could make energy prices go up.

Another big issue is Trump’s threat to add taxes  on European goods. He also criticized Spain for not spending enough on defense. This has made countries like France angry, saying it could start a trade fight with Europe’s close allies.

There’s also growing concern about the wars in the Middle East. The EU wants to help bring back peace talks with Iran about its nuclear program.

Inside the EU, there are arguments too. Countries don’t agree on how to deal with Israel’s actions in Gaza. And some political groups are upset that the EU is spending more on defense and less on fighting climate change.

The meeting will end with a statement that explains the EU’s plans for the next four months. This will show how Europe feels about global problems and what actions it might take next.
