Erdogan Commends Trump’s Role in Gaza Ceasefire Deal

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan lauded Donald Trump’s efforts and leadership in brokering a ceasefire deal in Gaza, after Trump gained Israel’s backing for a U.S.-sponsored peace proposal.

Following Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, the White House unveiled a 20-point plan involving an immediate truce, hostage exchanges, a phased Israeli withdrawal, the disarmament of Hamas, and a transitional governance structure overseen by an international body.

Erdoğan declared, “I commend U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts and leadership aimed at halting the bloodshed in Gaza and achieving a ceasefire.”

He added that Turkey would stay actively involved to help produce a just, lasting peace acceptable to all sides.

Turkey’s position and prior criticisms

Despite this praise, Turkey has been consistently critical of Israel’s campaign in Gaza. It has labeled Israel’s actions “genocide,” ceased trade relations, and persistently called for an independent Palestinian state.

A Turkish Foreign Ministry source confirmed that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had discussed Trump’s proposal with counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan via phone.

What lies ahead

It remains unclear whether Hamas will accept the deal. Erdoğan’s endorsement signals Ankara wants to play a constructive role in implementation. But challenges persist: how to ensure compliance, how governance is structured, and whether all parties will buy in.

If Hamas rejects the proposal, the deal could unravel — possibly triggering further confrontation. Turkey’s continued engagement may serve to balance competing interests among regional actors.
